The Bristol Bun

A sweet homage to the city, soft pillowy dough, cinnamon sugar, seasonal toppings and ridiculous levels of comfort.

A reimagined Colston bun, renamed and reclaimed for modern Bristol. Soft enriched dough, spiced with flavours inspired by Asia and the Caribbean, filled with toffee apple cider jam and finished as a multicultural, city-loving treat.

The Bristol Bun started as a question:

What if we took the old Colston bun, stripped away the name, the baggage and the raisins…
and rebuilt it as something that actually represents Bristol now?

So that is what we did.

We kept the heart of the traditional bun:
a soft, enriched dough, warm spices, a glossy bake.

Then we flipped the script.

We swapped in bright, juicy dried fruits like pineapple, papaya, mango and cherries, nodding to the global cultures that shape Bristol today.

We layered in spices inspired by Asia and the Caribbean, so every bite feels warm, fragrant and full of history, but in a way that celebrates people, not monuments.

In the centre, there is a Toffee Apple cider filling made into a thick, rich jam, tucked into the middle like a jam doughnut and piped on top so you get that sweet apple hit straight away. It is Bristol apples, Somerset cider, and cosy autumn dessert energy all in one.

The very first batch of Bristol Buns was made for a Bristol Bake-Off event at my boyfriend’s work, held the day before the old “Colston Day”, fitting as this is not his bun anymore.

This is Bristol’s.

Now it lives on as a Bru-La-Laaa signature bake. A soft, spiced, apple-filled, multicultural bun that tells a better story.
